Electrical Equipment Testing, commonly known as Portable Appliance Testing (PAT Testing), is the process of inspecting and testing electrical appliances to help ensure they are safe to use. Although the term "PAT Testing" is widely used, the correct term is now Electrical Equipment Testing, as it applies to all portable and movable electrical equipment, not just traditional portable appliances.
I provide professional Electrical Equipment Testing throughout Exeter and the surrounding areas, helping businesses, landlords, schools, charities, offices, holiday lets and other organisations meet their responsibilities for electrical safety.
There is no law that states PAT Testing must be carried out every year. However, UK health and safety legislation, including the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989, requires employers, landlords and anyone responsible for electrical equipment to ensure it is maintained in a safe condition.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) recommends a risk-based approach, meaning equipment should be inspected and tested at intervals appropriate to the level of risk. Factors that influence how often testing should be carried out include:
• The type of equipment.
• How frequently it is used.
• The environment it is used in.
• The likelihood of damage or misuse.
• Previous inspection and testing results.
For example, equipment used daily on a construction site may require much more frequent testing than a computer used occasionally in an office.
There is no single testing interval suitable for every workplace. As a general guide:
• Offices – typically every 2 to 4 years.
• Schools – every 1 to 2 years.
• Hotels and holiday accommodation – annually or as determined by a risk assessment.
Regular visual inspections between formal tests are also an important part of maintaining electrical safety.
Many business insurance policies, tenancy agreements and health and safety procedures require evidence that electrical equipment has been inspected and tested at appropriate intervals. While insurers' requirements vary, maintaining up-to-date Electrical Equipment Testing records demonstrates that you are taking reasonable steps to comply with your legal duty of care and manage electrical safety risks.
Following each visit, you'll receive clear records of the equipment tested and the results for your own records.
